We have some exciting news to share – the Angell Foundation has a new look and grantmaking strategy!
As is typical and healthy for all organizations, we recently spent time reflecting on our past and reevaluating what we believe in and where we are headed. We’ve learned a great deal over 17 years of grantmaking and through our relationships with incredible individuals and organizations striving to create a more just world. The starkest lesson for us has been that the opportunity gap for communities that have historically been underserved and under-resourced still exists, but is also widening for particular populations.
During the first chapter of our work, we funded efforts that spanned five broad areas. Moving forward, we are streamlining our efforts under a new frame called Transformative Opportunities in order to inspire lasting change in three core areas: supporting pathways to postsecondary degree attainment and promising careers, promoting food systems that provide equitable access to quality food, and cultivating compassionate leaders to be better equipped to advance social progress.
For us, the idea of Transformative Opportunities derives from the values of our founders, David and Lynn Angell, who believed that every person deserves an equal opportunity to live a healthy and enriched life.
We’ve built this concept into our new logo, which symbolizes change and reflects our shift in viewpoint. The titles of our new focus areas – Education As Opportunity, Food Equity, and Transformational Leadership – also reflect the concept of transformation and our commitment to equity.
Though we have a renewed focus, we are still the same Angell Foundation that we hope you have come to love and respect. Our grant processes, organizational culture, geographic priorities of Southern California and New England, and desire to work authentically and honestly with others remain unchanged.
We look forward to sharing this new strategy, participating in stimulating conversations about the importance of this work, and discovering new avenues to collaborate with the rest of the philanthropic community. This work is deeply personal to us. We are proud to continue the legacy of David and Lynn by continuing to do work that uplifts humanity.
Sincerely,
The Angell Team
